Fall 2010
Preparing for Kindergarten: Talk about school with your child. Help your child establish regular routines of sleeping and eating. Agree upon a specific bedtime. Teach your child to button, zip or snap his/her clothing and to take care of his/her toilet needs. Knowing how to tie shoelaces is a must! Give your child tasks to do at home. Such experiences develop responsibility, independence, and self-reliance.
L. ARTS: Give your child opportunities to refine oral language by allowing him/her to explain and describe experiences. Encourage your child to look and listen to the person talking.
READING: Read to your child to help him/her develop an appreciation for books. Visit the local Cobb County Library in Powder Springs for extra reading opportunities (They have an awesome summer reading program).
VOCABULARY: Take trips to points of interest. Encourage your child to discuss what they like or disliked about the experience. Museums, planetariums, and sporting events are some examples of enriching experiences.
WRITING: Keep a daily journal of events that happen this summer. Be sure to date them, and add a title to each. Your child can write or draw pictures to express themselves. Encourage your child to recognize his/her name.
MATH: Give your child opportunities to count and sort objects found at home (socks, silverware, shoes, groceries). Help them count the correct number of pennies in your purse or pocket. If they're correct, let them keep it!
SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES: Discuss the need for rules in the home, school, and the community. Help him/her to understand that sharing is necessary in order to get along with others and to be a part of a group. Encourage your child to make decisions by giving choices and then abide by those choices.
HEALTH: Help mom plan a healthy meal. Choose healthy snacks while in the grocery store.
Both you and the schools have major roles in helping your child learn, but how much the school can do depends on how much you do. Guide your child to trust the teachers and those who want the best for him/her.
