Week of May 11 - 15, 2009

This is the final week of the teacher rotations.  Grades will be turned in by Friday and I'll have everything updated by Monday. 

Math assignments:  Monday:  Finish film (identifying geometric shapes in film);  Tuesday:  Field Day; Wednesday, Thursday, Friday:  End of Year Math Test...we will break this up into three days since it is a long test (84 problems) and we don't want the students to rush through it.

Writing Assessment:  a writing assessment will be completed either this week or by the middle of next week.  This assessment will go with the student to the fifth grade.

By Friday, all students must turn in any late/missing work...they will be informed tomorrow what they are missing.  I'll write it in their agenda.  Most students already know what's missing (told on Monday)

Students took home a permission form to take a survey at school...it requires your signature and should be returned by Friday.

Next week all text books will be collected, papers and notebooks will be sent home and students will not need to bring anything (except a bookbag on Monday or a plastic bag to carry home their papers).  I'll provide them with paper and pencil during the last week of school.

I want to thank all of you for your hard work this year.  It's meant a lot to me and to this class.

Overview through the end of school

Here is an overview of what we'll be doing in class through the end of the school year:

This week (5/04 - 5/08) in math we will be completing a double bar graph/pictograph in class; complete a translation tessellation project in class (two days); and identifying shapes (review of geometry). 

Their homework for the week will be written on a daily basis in their agenda.  Today's homework:  Math - using their textbook, students will make a list (and draw) 10 shapes...look at page 272.  Language Arts -  complete the chart you developed in class.  Science - finish your paragraph (target students). 

Next week we have Field Day on the 12th of May and a PTA meeting on the 14th.  We need two voluteers to help run the activities for our class.  Please let me know if you are available. During the PTA meeting we will vot on next year's officers.  Students will also take the IMI this week.

Awards day is on the 20th and the last day of school is the 22nd.  Prior to the end of school, we will have a cumulative math test that will be sent to the 5th grade in their currrent fourth grade portfolio.  It will be given to the students around the 14th - 19th (to be completed in 2 days). 

Just a reminder...students brought home a progress report, but not all signatures have been returned.

We are finally finished with CRCT's.  I can't wait to see the results!

We are completing DRA's this week.

The fourth grade department is doing something a little different for the last month of school....   we are  departmentalizing to see if this is something we will do next year.  Here is your child's schedule:

 Teachers will give class and homework assignments (check student's agenda daily) and all grades will be given to me to place in the computer... I'll update their grade in two weeks and write it in their agenda.

*  This month's reading log is due Friday, May 1st.  Students should have read 250 minutes and notated it in their agenda on the April Calendar towards the front of their agenda.  Please be sure you initial their minutes.  Thanks so much for all you do!  Have a wonderful week. 

WEEK OF 4/13/09

Now is the time to study for the                 CRCT

 

Check out the CRCT page to the left.  Click on each site and practice taking the tests.  Remember, it helps to test more than once…also, test more often on the subjects where your score is the lowest.  Hint:  practice for about 20 minutes and then take a break… more than 20 minutes at a time isn’t always helpful.

 

 

What are we studying this week?

1.  Math – geometry (sides, vertices, edges, etc) and missing and duplicate information in charts.

 

2.  Social Studies – We should finish chpt 10 by the end of this week.  Students will write in their agenda when we’ll have their chpt 10 test (probably next Monday)

 

3.  Science – We’re studying food webs/ ecology.  Next week we will wrap up the last few pages in their workbook.  Their test will be open book (part of it will be given Friday and the rest will be given next Thursday).

 

4.  English – students are doing an author study and should bring a book by their favorite author to class each day.  We will also practice writing paragraphs, work on our grammar and continue with guided reading.  We are also studying unit 19 spelling words.

 

5.  Health – we have 1 or 2 health assignments per week… they read a short amount of information and then answer questions about the topic…they can use the reading material to help them answer their questions.

This week in school we are covering the following info:

 

Math:  we will practice mult. and division with decimals… our posttest is Thursday.

 

Soc. Studies:  we are covering the westward movement, beginning with Daniel Boone.   This will continue after we return from spring break.

                       

 

Science:  we will continue with ecology (won’t finish until after spring break).  Worm test is Thursday…label diagram.

               

 

Language Arts:  Spelling Unit 18 test is Friday

Friday is PAJAMA DAY...students can wear their pajamas if they bring $1.00 or ten dimes (donated to Relay for Life).  Our class also won a Pizza Party this Friday.

 This week in class...

Monday - we are taking the 4th quarter IMI  in Math; review for our test in Social Studies (material over the "New Nation"; introduce ecology in Science; and in Language Arts we are starting Unit 17 for Spelling, an author study (reading), and continuing to write paragraphs and review grammar.

Tuesday - practice multiplication (decimal by a whole number) in math; review for our Social Studies test; continue with ecology (worms) this week in Science; and continue with reading, writing, and grammar in Language Arts.

Wednesday - today is our CRCT practice (on laptops) today in class; we'll also take our Social Studies test; and then we'll have a Health assignment, too.

Thursday - in math we will work on multiplying decimals all week; see a film in Social Studies on Westward Expansion today; continue with "worms" in Science, and also continue with our author study, writing, and grammar in Language Arts.

Friday - we'll work on word problems in Math; begin our notes on westward expansion in Social Studies; wrap up worms in Science (quiz); take a spelling test over Unit 17; continue with our author study, writing, and grammar.

Week of March 2-6, 2009

Hello everyone!  Here are the homework assignments for this week, along with a short summary of what we are doing this week in class...

Math:  This week in math we are discussing grams and kilograms.  Students will receive a worksheet for homework on Monday and Tuesday. They will have a test over oz/lbs/T/ g/kg on Friday. 

Social Studies:  We are going to finish up our projects on the American Revolution, do our presentations, and begin discussing government.  Presentations begin on Monday and will conclude on Wednesday.  Their test is on Thursday and they received a study guide two weeks ago and completed the guide by last Tuesday.  The test will come from this study guide.

Science:  We finished planets last Friday and will have our test over it on Wednesday...they completed their study guide in class last Friday and we reviewed it today.  This week we will begin comparing planets and stars and our test over stars will be next week.  Most of our assignments will be completed in class, but if we are unable to finish something, the students will write it in their agenda and I'll initial it.  These assignments will probably be in their science workbook....so, please check their agendas. 

Language Arts:  Reading is a daily goal for our students...10-20 minutes per night is recommended.  For this month, students will write in their agenda (monthly calendar section) the number of minutes they read each night.  They will complete a book review at the end of the month.  The February reading log was due today.  The writng section of their research paper will also be a writing grade for the students. 

Spelling:  Unit 15 spelling test is next Monday.  Spelling words were written in their agendas and is on the 2/12/09 post along with unit 16.

I will have the students write their current grades in their agenda this Friday and initial it so you can see where they are at this time.  Third nine week report cards will be sent home the middle of this month.  Notes are written in their agenda when they are not turning in assignments...please check their agenda for these notes and feel free to email me with your concerns and comments.  Thank you for all you do...have a wonderful week.

Week of 2/23/09 - 2/27/09

Hi Everyone!  Guess what?  Our copiers are all down at this time, so there will be littler homework in advance...it'll be a day-by-day thing until the copiers are working again.

However, tonight's homework (2/23) is in their math workbook:  16.3                 At this time we are starting on weight:  ounces, pounds, and tons.  Later this week we will be comparing unit prices and begin on the metric system...our test over this unit will be next Friday (March).  Most of our work will be completed in class with hands-on activities and small group/partner work.

Social Studies this week (and English) involves completion of a project in class over a topic assigned and researched last week.  I'll provide all the basic materials they'll need (except embellishments for decoration).  Today we went over the format for the rough draft and they can start on their final copy as soon as their rough draft is checked.  I'll have computers in class every day this week for their use.

Of course, they'll need to read 20 minutes daily outside of school.  Their Six Flags form is due on the 26th (not one day later).  Box tops will also be collected on the 26th.  We will be competing with other classes to raise $ by donating dimes.  This begins the end of this week.

Science will involve the study of the solar system and next week we'll discuss stars and constellations, too.  Homework for this subject will also be on a day-by-day basis and will be written in the agenda and initialled by me.  By the end of next week, I hope to have an updated progress report for you.
